Sustainability

Southern Lakes Helicopters are strongly committed to the stewardship of our unique environment and are responsible in the use of natural resources.

Sustainability is an integral element of everything we do. Operating in a sustainable manner is an ongoing journey, that will improve with time and experience. We are proud to work together with The Department of Conservation (DoC), Antarctica New Zealand and NIWA, Earth Sciences New Zealand supporting scientific research and combining our efforts to protect and look after the environments of New Zealand, the Southern Ocean, and Antarctica.

Our Values
Kaitiakitanga

A Māori word meaning guardianship, care and protection. This provides a basis for our approach to sustainably managing our natural, cultural and built environment for current and future generations.

Manaakitanga

A Māori word which implies a reciprocal responsibility upon a host, and an invitation to a client or visitor to experience the very best we have to offer.

Sustainability Commitment

As an official member of Tourism Industry Aotearoa we are excited to have joined the New Zealand Tourism Sustainability Commitment, which strives to see every NZ tourism business committed to sustainability.

Recently we took part in the Murihiku Sustainable Tourism Pilot Programme, where we looked at the importance of sustainability, regeneration and Net Zero, Climate Change, Greenhouse gases and measured our carbon footprint.

We worked through the calculation to measure our carbon footprint, this considered fuel, electricity, refrigeration, travel, freight, wastewater and waste produced.

As a result, we have started by reducing what we can in our daily operations and are excited to have added a Eurocopter EC120 and the modern Airbus B3e Squirrel aircraft to our fleet.

These aircraft are designed to be environmentally friendly and the EC 120 being the quietest in its class, reinforcing our commitment to protecting our unique environment and sustainable tourism.

If you would like information on our efforts or the carbon footprint of your flight please get in touch with the team.

By following the Tiaki Promise, we are committed to New Zealand. To act as a guardian, protecting and preserving our home.

Green Practices

We strive to maintain green practices in our everyday operations through the little things.

Such as using energy sources in an efficient manner, reducing our waste with recycling, digital vs paper, eco-friendly cleaning products, as well as protecting sensitive and native vegetation and wildlife when considering flight paths and landing zone.
